Sign the petition: NO U.S. occupation in Venezuela! Dear MoveOn member, Donald Trump is once again abusing his power as president, attempting to drag the American people into yet another forever war. This is not what the American people voted for—and we will not allow Trump's unconstitutional and unilateral actions to go unchecked. The decision to put American people at risk by using military force to invade and capture foreign leaders—potentially destabilizing a country and creating long-term consequences globally—should not rest in the hands of one person. That's exactly why that power lies with Congress, not any single president. But Trump blatantly ignored the rule of law. And, if his actions go without consequences, it sets a dangerous precedent not only for Trump but for other global leaders as well. The American people want affordable groceries and health care, not another expensive forever war. And Trump's reckless and dangerous military actions didn't begin and won't end with Venezuela. Last year, Trump's military bombed seven countries and launched the largest military presence in the Caribbean Sea in decades.1 And now, emboldened by the military action in Venezuela, Trump has resumed his threats to take over Greenland, and threatened to do the same in Colombia, Mexico, and Cuba.2,3 "Nobody can stop us," Trump threatened.4 But he's wrong. We, the people, can stop him. As early as this week, Congress could use their power to block Trump from continuing military action against Venezuela.5 But they need to hear from us and to feel the heat from their constituents in order to pressure them to act swiftly. Trump striking Venezuela and kidnapping the country's leader, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores, in the middle of the night was in clear violation of U.S. and international law. Make no mistake—this action and the deadly and illegal boat strikes in the Caribbean leading up to it boil down to one thing: greed. Trump is barely trying to hide the fact that his illegal and destabilizing military actions against Venezuela are about nothing other than money, stating that the U.S. will run Venezuela in order to "get the oil flowing."6 Sign the petition NOW to make it clear that Americans do NOT support a U.S. occupation in Venezuela! The people of Venezuela deserve what people everywhere deserve—the ability to decide their future and govern themselves. But Trump is threatening on-the-ground occupation, stating, "We're not afraid of boots on the ground if we have to have them."7 We've already seen what happens when warmongering world leaders entangle their citizens in lengthy, expensive, and unjustified conflicts. Everyone loses. Let's be clear: Maduro is a dictator who oppressed his own people. But Trump doesn't care what happens to the people of Venezuela. In fact, Maduro may be ousted, but his regime is still intact—a reality that U.S. intervention doesn't solve for by design. Because the goal isn't freedom, it's dominance. We need to stop the conflict in Venezuela from escalating further, allow for the power to go back into the hands of the Venezuelan people, and demand Congress rein in Trump and actually focus on the issues everyday Americans care about.
