I have incredible news, Pamela: moments ago, the U.S. Senate advanced a bipartisan bill to block Trump's unconstitutional and reckless military actions in Venezuela.
Thousands of Common Cause members like you spoke out this week. And today, five Republicans joined all 47 Democrats and used the power vested in them to stop Trump from ramping up a conflict that the rest of us will have to pay the price for.
Pamela, today's win is proof that our voices and persistence matter. There's still work to do – but history could look back on today as when the tide began to turn, and Congress finally started doing its job and holding this president accountable.
And especially if you're represented by Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Todd Young of Indiana, Rand Paul of Kentucky, Susan Collins of Maine, or Josh Hawley of Missouri, please call them today to thank them for doing the right thing.
Next up: we're shifting our focus to the House, where this resolution will also need to pass. Together, these measures would be a historic rebuke of the president's quest for Venezuelan oil, while reasserting Congress's role in deciding matters of war and peace – as the Constitution requires.
You've already helped turn the tide this week – now take action again to tell Representative Mike Haridopolos to vote YES on H.Con.Res.64 and stand up to Trump's one-man march to war. >>
Here's what we believe, Pamela – and I hope you feel the same way:
The U.S. military shouldn't be a global police force, and no president should be allowed to use our military for a personal or political cash grab.
Generations will pay the price if Congress abdicates its constitutional role and lets Trump drag us into open-ended military action.
And no matter how illegitimate or abusive a foreign leader may be, Trump can't just kidnap them without regard for international law.
Pamela, in this moment where the odds seem stacked against us, I want you to know that your action right now can make a real difference. Can you speak out again today?
Thanks for all you do,
The team at Common Cause
