Dear MoveOn member,
Donald Trump threatened to send the U.S. military to Minneapolis to silence and intimidate people who are protesting ICE's rampant abuse and abductions of neighbors.1 This is on top of the thousands of ICE agents and National Guard troops currently there.
Trump's threat, which he has put on hold for now, comes shortly after ICE shot and killed Renee Good—a 37-year-old mom of three—in broad daylight and after ICE shot a Venezuelan immigrant just days later.2,3
ICE's violence has ignited a surge of public outrage, courage, solidarity, and protest all across the country. In response, Trump said, "I could use [the Insurrection Act] immediately and no judge can even challenge [me] on that."5 The president is willing to turn the U.S. military against its own people to continue its massive, unnecessary ICE operation.
It's the same old playbook: Trump is trying to silence us to keep himself in power and make the rich even richer.
When tyrants like Trump try to quash dissent, we have only one way to respond: Make clear our outrage. Persist. Keep marching peacefully. Keep organizing nonviolently.
Last weekend, MoveOn and our coalition partners in just days called for and provided the mobilization infrastructure to enable hundreds of thousands of people across the country, some for the first time ever, to protest in one of nearly 1,300 ICE Out for Good demonstrations. To continue the momentum, days later, we held a rally and vigil outside of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection headquarters, with members of Congress, community leaders, and thousands of people.
And we aren't stopping there. Government funding runs out on January 30, and Democrats will once again have leverage—if they use it. We're calling on Democrats to refuse to fund Trump's brutal ICE force.
As Trump threatens to send the military to crack down on protesters, we must continue to work at lightning speed to rein in Trump and ICE and protect our communities, lives, and freedom. Trump is ripping people off the streets and sending armed troops to our neighborhoods not to protect us but to silence us so he can get away with his health care cuts.
Here's how Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez put it:
"I want everybody to understand: The cuts to your health care are what's paying for this. So, understand how these dots connect. You get screwed over to pay a bunch of thugs in the street that are shooting mothers in the face. That is what this administration's doing."6
Instead of using his power to make our lives better, bring down the cost of living, and ensure everyone has health care, Trump is using it to seek revenge against those who disagree with him.
If Trump can get away with flooding Minnesota's streets with masked ICE agents and sending armed troops against peaceful protesters, then he could come to your hometown next.
Which is why the time to act is now—before the violence and cruelty get even worse. ICE reportedly plans to invest $100 million in what it calls the "wartime recruitment" of 10,000 new agents, in addition to the 20,000 already employed, with recruitment targeting gun and military enthusiasts and people who listen to right-wing radio, among others.7
Our next steps are to pressure Democrats to use the leverage they have in the Department of Homeland Security funding showdown at the end of this month to defund ICE. Thanks for all you do.
