Pamela,
Canceling elections is the stuff of autocracy. And it’s exactly what Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry is trying to do right now. Early voting had already started when he issued an emergency executive order to suspend the congressional primaries. Louisianans were casting their ballots under a map which ensured that Black voters — about a third of the state’s population — would be free to elect the candidates of their choice in two out of six congressional districts. But the Supreme Court had just said states could rig new Jim Crow–style voting maps that effectively disenfranchise voters of color. And the governor couldn’t wait to take advantage of this golden opportunity to turn back the clock. Now Louisiana lawmakers are racing to draw new maps that could eliminate both congressional districts with fair representation for Black voters. Alongside Electoral Collective Action, we’re mobilizing Louisianans to speak out to their lawmakers against this power grab, we’re helping to recruit attendees for public events to show mass resistance, and we’re standing up for fair elections with fair maps. Will you split a donation between Electoral Collective Action and Fair Fight Action as we race to try to stop new rigged maps in Louisiana and across the South? Electoral Collective Action works on the ground in Louisiana to increase voter engagement and accountability in government — so people can have a true voice in their future.
This work is only growing more vital by the day, as far-right governors and legislative leadership across the South move to rig their congressional maps before voters can stop them. But we’re pushing back against this coordinated attempt to seize unearned power. And every donation helps power the fight for a democracy where every voter can make their voice heard. Please split a contribution between Electoral Collective Action and Fair Fight Action today. In solidarity, The Fair Fight Action Team
