Pamela,
Let’s talk about the power you have.
Because there are a lot of politicians out there who want you to feel powerless and cynical about what’s possible in America — especially during moments like this.
But it’s not up to them. Our nation was built on a simple promise: Each of us gets to have a say.
That principle is under attack right now. This week’s Supreme Court decisions effectively guts a key pillar of the Voting Rights Act, freeing state legislatures to gerrymander legislative districts to systematically dilute and weaken the voting power of racial minorities.
They don't want their constituents to hold them accountable. That’s why they manipulate maps to get an undeserved advantage. It’s why they make it harder for some to cast their ballots.
It’s being done out of desperation — to cling to power, no matter the cost.
Pamela, we call America an experiment for a reason. Democracy is far from guaranteed. Generation after generation has been called upon to make this country better. Time after time, we’ve seen groups of ordinary Americans organize, march, and sacrifice to preserve and strengthen democracy.
Now it’s our turn.
Redistricting Action is the grassroots team leading the fight against these attacks on democracy. I’m proud that Attorney General Eric Holder and I started this work, because it takes all of us doing our part in moments like this.
Thank you,
Barack Obama
