Southern Legislators are Rushing to Rig the Voting MapsMass resistance is needed NOW. Here's how to show up.
Days after the Supreme Court gutted a key piece of the Voting Rights Act in Louisiana v. Callais, far-right governors and legislative leadership across the South is moving to rig their congressional maps before voters can stop them. This isn’t a coincidence. It’s a coordinated, region-wide power grab – special sessions convening within days, maps that could be rammed through before public input is possible, and early voting already underway in Louisiana. They want to lock in control of Congress by deciding which votes count and which don’t. Political parties compete for votes. Authoritarian movements try to steal them. This is the endgame of a decades-long strategy to dismantle voting rights and lock communities of color out of power. They’re moving fast – but we can move quickly too. These maps still have to pass both chambers and be signed by governors before they can become law. If your vote didn’t matter, they wouldn’t be working this hard to take it away. Mass resistance is needed now – and together we have the power to fight back. Here’s how to show up this week. Louisiana – All Roads Lead to New OrleansGov. Jeff Landry canceled the May 16 U.S. House primary by emergency executive order, and state lawmakers are racing to redraw the map as soon as Wednesday. Bills already filed would eliminate Louisiana’s majority-Black congressional districts.
Alabama – Pull Up to the People’s HouseGov. Kay Ivey called a special session to push back the May 19 congressional primary so the legislature can redraw the map after the Supreme Court rules on a pending Alabama redistricting case. They’re betting that ruling will let them dismantle districts that allow Black Alabamians fair representation.
Tennessee – Hands Off Our MapsGov. Bill Lee called a special session with only four days’ notice to redraw congressional maps before public input is possible. The session is scheduled for May 5 — less than two weeks after the state legislature wrapped its annual session. Power hour – phone bank from anywhere – Sunday:
