Pamela — in normal times, any one of these headlines would be a five-alarm fire for democracy. ICE investigating nonprofits that guide people through voter registration. The President of the United States illegally used taxpayer money to run propaganda ads just weeks before the midterms. Republicans planning to reboot partisan gerrymandering for 2028 in the immediate aftermath of the midterms. As A.G. Holder recently said: “We’ve got to be prepared for just about anything. Donald Trump has shown that he’s prepared to use all the levers of power he has in order to ensure a result that he wants.” The threat is real. And it won’t just go away. We have to defeat it.
If you want to know how important these races are, just ask the billionaires spending big to defeat them. The Guardian is reporting that Elon Musk has personally spent a whopping $366 million to elect right-wing candidates. The richest person in the world is now putting his power, wealth, and influence directly to use to support one party. And what makes this more concerning is that he’s targeting battleground races that could determine whether fair maps, equal representation, and voting rights are protected in the future. They know we can’t outraise their millions. But here’s what I know: the power of the people can beat billionaire power. Together, we shut down Elon Musk’s attempt to buy a Wisconsin Supreme Court seat last spring. And we’ve worked to push back against the most egregious gerrymandering schemes to stop Republicans from being able to rig the midterms. Thank you, KT Coleman
