Happy Halloween, Pamela, — I hope your holiday is exactly as spooky as you want it to be, with plenty of your favorite treats. Because it’s October 31st, today is also our final monthly fundraising deadline before Tuesday’s midterm elections. And we really need one last push from grassroots donors like you to support Democracy Defenders running in tight races — these are elections that are critical to how democracy functions in key states.
I can’t help but make a Halloween connection to some of the election-related headlines floating around right now. Republican candidates have dressed themselves up in some very unconvincing costumes — pretending to not have extreme anti-democracy views and pretending to not be radicals who are intent on continuing to rip away our freedoms. But let’s face it: they’re not winning any costume contests. And you might say that Republicans are running the “Trick AND Treat” playbook: First, they try all the dirty tricks — like manipulating maps and making it harder to vote. Then, when that’s not enough to guarantee their victory, they resort to basically going door to door begging for treats from the wealthiest, most powerful people in the country. And that begging is getting results: The New York Times:“Billionaire Republicans are vastly outspending Democrats…This election will be the most expensive in history” The Washington Post:“Musk breaks donor record as the ultrarich pour $2.7 billion into the midterms…the other largest donors this cycle lean heavily Republican” It’s not a coincidence that major right-wing donors are targeting states like Ohio, Georgia, Texas, and Florida, where some of the most important governors’ races are up for grabs. Thank you, Claire Low

Call it the “trick AND treat” playbook
