Pamela: Earlier this month, violent Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian farmers, who were harvesting olives, and a group of journalists. Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine had to be rushed to the hospital with broken bones.[1]
When Israeli troops arrived, rather than restrain the assailants, they fired tear gas at Palestinians, emboldening the settlers further.
This is just one recent example: Nine Americans have been killed in the West Bank in recent years, and even more have been detained. Countless Palestinians, dozens of journalists, and even U.S. politicians have been targeted. No one has received accountability or justice.
A group of lawmakers is trying to change that, and they’re growing in numbers by the day. Fifty-nine members of Congress currently co-sponsor Rep. Joaquin Castro’s Stop the Settlements Act, which would impose U.S. sanctions to stop illegal settlements and outposts in the West Bank and Gaza.

The British, French, Canadian, Dutch, and Spanish governments have each recently imposed sanctions on illegal Israeli settlements over the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in the West Bank. It marked a crucial break from a longstanding status quo of unequivocal support for the Israeli government.
The U.S. government, meanwhile, continues its complicity in unconscionable harm and suffering — even bankrolling violence that has killed its own citizens. The Stop the Settlements Act (H.R.10642) would usher in a new era of justice.
Rep. Castro’s legislation mirrors existing efforts of our allies, pushing targeted sanctions to create a de facto freeze on new settlement construction in the West Bank. It would also give the U.S. government the authority to begin going after some of the most problematic and destabilizing settlements and outposts in the West Bank.
Votes to demand accountability on Israeli government violence were once taboo in Congress, with accountability efforts easily rejected by lopsided tallies. That’s changed. Now, nearly half the Senate — 46 out of 47 Democrats — are voting to end U.S. complicity in this horrific violence. We have to keep going.
But the path to majority is far from clear: We need to work even harder to build the same momentum in the House. You can help by sending a message to your representative today.
Tell Your Rep: Pass the Stop the Settlements Act!
