Pamela: Senators Sanders, Kaine (D-VA), and Van Hollen (D-MD) are leading the charge to change a horrific status quo and end settler attacks and illegal land grabs in the West Bank — it starts with ending U.S. complicity in this violence.
When the Senate returns to session this week, these lawmakers will invoke a powerful, rarely-used procedural rule to demand a report from the Secretary of State on human rights abuses in the West Bank. It’s a report that could result in an END to U.S. arms sales to the Israeli government.
We don’t need to convince you that the violence Palestinians are experiencing is wrong, Pamela; that it’s immoral or illegal. But as U.S. bulldozers and weapons help fuel this violence, we’re reminding you that you can play a key role in advocating for it to stop.

The British, Canadian, and French governments just imposed sanctions on illegal Israeli settlements over ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in the West Bank. Their announcements mark a crucial shift from longstanding policies of unequivocal support for the Israeli government.[2]
The U.S. government, meanwhile, continues to bankroll this violence — which has killed nine Americans over the last four years.
Whether it’s targeting olive harvesters, whose families have farmed the land for generations, members of Congress, or U.S. news crews, the scale of illegal settler violence knows no bounds.
If you’re outraged or even hopeless, you’re not alone. But here’s the thing we can never forget: Pamela, people in the U.S. have unique leverage to push for change.
The Foreign Assistance Act gives Congress the right to demand reporting on human rights standards from any country receiving security assistance funding. Forcing the State Department to admit human rights violations in the West Bank could spell an end to arms sales and other U.S. assistance to the Israeli government.
Because this resolution isn’t subject to the president’s veto, exposing Israeli settler violence and holding settlers accountable is an important step towards stopping the U.S. from handing over more weapons and funding to the Israeli government — and seeking justice and safety for Palestinians.
Polls show that Americans now hold historic levels of opposition to U.S. support for the Israeli government's atrocities — violence that our own government is complicit in. Public opposition isn’t enough, at least not yet. Now, let’s translate our growing outrage into political power by pressuring Senators to take real action.
