Tell the Senate: Demand Answers Over West Bank Violence. Hold the Israeli Government Accountable.

A dam of unequivocal support for the Israeli government is breaking.

Last week, journalists with NBC News were interviewing a Palestinian woman in the West Bank who had been driven from her home when Israeli settlers attacked — beating them with sticks and throwing rocks at them.[1] This was just one instance amidst a series of Israeli settler attacks that same day.

Violence has become the norm for people across the West Bank, Pamela. But as the Senate returns to Washington later this month, we can change this broken status quo.

For too long, Israeli security forces have allowed settler violence to rapidly expand, or worse, contributed to the displacement of Palestinian families. For too long, the U.S. government has helped bankroll violence that harms U.S. citizens.

Sens. Van Hollen (D-MD), Kaine (D-VA), and Sanders (I-VT) will be introducing a privileged resolution demanding a State Department report on increasing violence in the West Bank. It’s a rarely used but powerful procedural maneuver because it isn’t subject to a president’s veto.

If human rights violations are uncovered, it could spell an end to arms sales and other U.S. assistance to the Israeli government. Let’s get to work.

Nine Americans have been killed in the West Bank in recent years, and even more have been detained. Not a single one has received accountability or justice — not from the Israeli government, and not from their own.

“It’s past time we get answers on their deaths – and on the growing violent instability in the West Bank and the injustices facing Palestinian civilians on a daily basis,” Sen. Van Hollen said upon announcing the intent of his resolution, which 10 more senators are co-sponsoring.

Calling out this violence is the bare minimum. Even far-right U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee called one settler attack a “horrific act of terror."[2] Israeli PM Netanyahu’s government has condemned “criminal acts of violence.”[1]

Words come easy, but actions speak volumes — and that’s exactly why we need Congress to step up and act.

Just 15 senators voted to block a weapons transfer to the Israeli government in early 2025. Months later, 27 senators blocked U.S.-made bombs and rifles bound for the Israeli military. The dam of unequivocal support for the Israeli government broke in the Senate when a record 40 senators voted to halt the transfer of armored bulldozers earlier this year.

Now is our moment to push even further. It all starts with building support for a crucial resolution demanding accountability for violence and American deaths in the West Bank.
