Trump and his allies frame this deal as a boon for nuclear energy. The details paint a more alarming picture that paves the way for nuclear weapons development, with four lawmakers going so far as to say, “this deal is the starting gun for a Middle East nuclear arms race.”[1]

Nonproliferation — and, indeed, denuclearization — should be among the U.S. government’s top priorities. Instead, Trump’s agreement comes after years of U.S.-driven instability in the Middle East, including his disastrous decision to launch an illegal war on Iran just six months ago. It means abandoning longstanding safeguards and only incentivizes other governments to seek the tools to build nuclear weapons.

No one is made safer.

For years, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been pushing for a deal like this. Thanks to Trump, he could well end up with one — that is, unless Congress steps in to stop it.

Under the Atomic Energy Act, Congress can block or modify this deal, allowing the Saudi government to develop the technology and materials capable of building a nuclear weapon — which could supercharge a global arms race in the Middle East.[2]

But lawmakers only have 90 days to act, and the review period is already underway.

Members of Congress will be poring through the details of Trump’s proposed agreement as they return from recess. Let’s make sure that as they do, they know where their constituents stand.
