Will you sign the petition to reject the SAVE Act?

Our leaders should be encouraging participation in elections, not putting up barriers to vote.

The SAVE Act would disenfranchise millions of people from voting. Demand Republicans abandon this anti-democratic bill. Dear MoveOn member, We're in an illegal war with Iran that is costing billions of dollars every week.1 At the same time, a crisis is unfolding at U.S. airports due to Republicans' refusal to pay TSA agents for over a month, resulting in agents quitting or not reporting to work and causing hours-long lines and widespread delays nationwide.2 And to make matters worse, Trump has now deployed ICE agents to airports, stoking fear among many.3 But instead of reining in Trump's abuse of power and funding TSA so agents can be paid and people can travel with ease, what have Republicans been focused on this past week? A days-long performative debate on a bill intended to make it more difficult for millions of people to vote, the so-called SAVE America Act.4 And Trump has threatened that he won't sign any new bills until the Senate passes it.5 That tells us everything we need to know. Will you join the over 85,000 MoveOn members in signing the petition to demand that Congress protect our freedom to vote and reject the SAVE America Act? Enough already! Demand your senators reject this voter suppression bill. At its core, the bill would create unnecessary, costly hurdles for people to register or reregister to vote. And this is the intention. It's blatant voter suppression. The SAVE America Act would require people to present a birth certificate or passport to prove their citizenship in order to register to vote. In Trump's America, a drivers license wouldn't cut it. Here are some of the issues with that: Currently, 21 million U.S. citizens of voting age do not have proof of citizenship readily available.6 More than half of Americans do not have a passport, and they are costly and time-consuming to obtain.7   Millions lack access to a paper copy of their birth certificate.8 Nearly 70 million people, primarily married women, could be disenfranchised because their name no longer matches their birth certificate.9 This bill would also essentially end voter registration by mail and online.10 The requirement to obtain and present these documents in person could mean a great nuisance for some, but for others, it could mean barriers that are too high or impossible to overcome. It would particularly impact low-income voters and the millions upon millions of women who have changed their last name through marriage, as well as young people, people living in rural communities, people living on tribal lands, unhoused people, and, disproportionately, people of color. Add your name now: STOP the Save America Act! Our leaders should be encouraging participation in elections, not disincentivizing our engagement, but that's exactly what this bill does. Research is clear that the easier the voter registration process, the higher number of people on voter rolls.11 Here's the thing: Trump knows the SAVE America Act has no path forward. That's why he's using threats to get his way—not a single Democrat supports it, and Republicans have no way of getting the votes needed—but yet, they're still wasting time debating this bill. Our nation is struggling, and it's time for our legislators to focus on issues to bring relief to everyday Americans, not silence their voices. It's time for Republicans to abandon this bill and all attempts to suppress our votes. In this country, voters choose their leaders, not the other way around.
