Protest is critical right now, Pamela. And our youth know that and are exercising their constitutional right. Students across more than three dozen states are organizing walkouts, sit-ins, and rallies to protest ICE actions in their communities.
But now, state leaders in Texas are targeting these brave youth. Governor Greg Abbott has wanted districts about funding consequences, schools might be marking protesting students absent and signaled potential sanctions.
These students are doing the right thing by standing up for what's right. State education leaders must make it clear that students will not face retaliation for exercising their constitutional right to peacefully protest.
We've seen this before; once they start coming for one type of protestor, we'll see these fascists attacking all protestors. Next, they'll come for people protesting against the illegal war in Iran, just like we saw the crackdown on anti-genocide protestors a few years ago.
This sets a chilling precedent, Pamela.
Tell your statewide superintendent and educational agency to say that you oppose retaliation against public schools and demand protection for students protesting ICE now.
In solidarity,
Mike Phelan
