π Hi Pamela! Happy Saturday.
In the Watchdog Newsletter, we share what you need to know to hold power accountable from the nonpartisan source you can trust. This watchdog doesn't give in to pressure from presidents.
This week's Common Cause newsletter is just a 5 minute read at 750 words.
✊π½ Honoring Voting Rights History in Selma
Last weekend, team Common Cause gathered in Selma, Alabama to commemorate the 61st anniversary of Bloody Sunday — when peaceful marchers were brutally attacked on the Edmund Pettus Bridge while demanding the right to vote.
Walking across the same bridge where previous generations made history was a powerful reminder that the fight for voting rights did not end in 1965. The courage of those marchers led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act, changed the course of our nation, and sparked true democracy in America for the first time.
More than six decades later, the work continues. From protecting access to the ballot to defending our fundamental rights from attacks by the Trump administration, Common Cause remains committed to carrying forward the legacy of Selma by ensuring every voice can be heard.
π "Kristi, you're fired."
After months of organizing by Common Cause members nationwide, Kristi Noem is finally fired.
YOU helped make this happen — by demanding accountability after Noem's rampage of corruption, human rights abuses, and the tragic deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
Through our "Fire Kristi Noem" campaign, Common Cause collected nearly 100,000 petition signatures and helped generate tens of thousands of calls to Congress demanding action.
Together, we sent an unmistakable message: Americans won't stay silent while Donald Trump and Stephen Miller weaponize our government against our own communities.
This victory shows the power of people speaking up and taking action together. Now, we must continue pushing Congress in demanding real accountability before DHS receives another penny.
π³️ ️Defending Election Integrity in Colorado
Right now, Colorado is facing a critical test for its election integrity and the rule of law. Convicted criminal Tina Peters — the former Mesa County clerk who led one of the most serious election security breaches in our nation's history — is seeking clemency from Governor Jared Polis.
Peters abused her position as county clerk to help compromise the very election systems she swore to protect, and a jury of her peers convicted her of multiple serious crimes. Forgiving Peters would only serve to reward election deniers and send a dangerous message that people can interfere with our elections without consequence.
That's why Common Cause is leading a coalition of voting rights organizations in demanding Governor Polis reject clemency and stand with 20,000 Common Cause members in Colorado and the rule of law.
Actions have consquences, and Tina Peters is facing those just consequences.
