Pamela, we often talk about our fight for fair maps under the aim of ensuring fair representation and strengthening our democracy. And those principles are at the core of it all.
But the truth is: progress on every issue we care about depends on fair maps.
If you want to end inhumane immigration policies, fair maps are your fight. If you want to protect reproductive rights, fair maps are your fight. If you're concerned about the rising costs of health care, housing, and higher education, fair maps are your fight.
When politicians redraw maps to consolidate power, the will of the people is diminished — and that's by design. They want elections they can't lose.
But the outcomes are devastating for democracy. Without competition in general elections, politicians are rewarded for acting on extreme positions. Representation suffers, and progress stalls on the issues that matter.
That's why we're leading this movement to fight back wherever politicians try to unfairly manipulate maps in their favor and take away our power. But we have been thrown into an unprecedented redistricting crisis in the last year, and our ability to stop it depends on whether or not we have the resources to scale up our work on multiple fronts.
