Inside 2020 Election Deniers’ “Emergency” Plan to Fuel Trump's Election TakeoverNew reporting reveals Trump’s allies are testing a “national emergency” strategy to seize control of 2026 elections. You may have missed this — the network that tried to overturn the 2020 election just met with Trump officials. While headlines focused on Iran, a new ProPublica investigation reveals they were advancing a “national emergency” plan to give Trump control of the 2026 midterm elections. If that sounds familiar, it’s because in October the New York Times reported that this “national emergency” strategy had been circulating inside Trump’s orbit for months. One of the officials at the center of it was Heather Honey — now a senior Department of Homeland Security official. She was also one of the Trump officials at this recent meeting. (New York Times; ABC27; ProPublica)Before Trump appointed Honey to DHS, she was part of the Election Integrity Network – EIN – a group that has spent years spreading false election claims and advancing policies to restrict voting access. Now, they’ve become a central hub for the strategy driving Trump’s election efforts. (ProPublica; The New Republic)EIN was founded by Cleta Mitchell — Trump’s 2020 attorney who played a central role in efforts to overturn his loss. Cleta was on the call pressuring Georgia’s Secretary of State to “find” votes, and she was at this meeting too. Weeks earlier, she met with White House officials about election policy. (New York Times; The Intercept; CNN; Washington Post)And the meeting ProPublica revealed wasn’t just a symbolic gathering. After it ended, a White House lawyer agreed to carry the “consensus” back to Trump. And just days before ProPublica’s story, the Washington Post reported on a draft executive order that could put this strategy into action. (ProPublica; Washington Post)To be clear: the Constitution says states run elections and Congress can regulate aspects of them – not the president. Legal experts are preparing to challenge any attempt to use emergency powers to control elections. (Cato Institute; Marc Elias)But here’s why it matters: if elections can be manipulated from the top, voters lose their power. And if the same people stay in control no matter what – the corruption, chaos and violence, and policies hurting working families – none of it changes. (NPR; The Nation; CBS News; Reuters)This ProPublica investigation deserves to be on every front page. |
