HRC-ENDORSED REP. JULIE JOHNSON ADVANCES TO RUN-OFF IN TX 33: U.S. Rep. Julie Johnson has advanced to a runoff in her bid to retain her seat despite an anti-democratic attempt by the anti-equality majority in the Texas Legislature to redraw congressional maps and place her in a new district. In support of Congresswoman Johnson's candidacy, HRC hosted 16 events, engaged over 300 volunteers, made 1,500 calls, and contacted over 47,000 voters in the lead up to election night. HRC President Kelley Robinson said of the result, "Julie has never backed down from a fight, and neither have the voters who support her." Read more here.
ALAN CUMMING, BOWEN YANG LAUNCH NEW FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT LGBTQ+ FILMMAKERS: Actors Alan Cumming and Bowen Yang are teaming up with filmmaker Lena Waithe and producer Adam Goldman to launch the Necessary Foundation, a new nonprofit aimed at helping the next generation of LGBTQ+ filmmakers break into the industry. "There is, in this moment, enormous political pressure to delete queer people from American media," Goldman told The Hollywood Reporter. "Now it's time to push back."
SWIFT ENFORCEMENT OF KANSAS' SEVERE ANTI-TRANS LAW CREATES DISTURBING REALITY FOR TRANS RESIDENTS: Transgender Kansas are receiving letters demanding the surrender of their drivers licenses, a result of swift enforcement of SB 244 — a disturbing piece of legislation that was enacted by the state legislature after overriding the Governor's veto in spite of her concerns of the sweeping impact this would on Kansans. "My father would always call me two-spirited, and I never knew what he meant," said queer pop star VINCINT.
