Pamela,
By its plain text, the U.S. Constitution requires that "the whole number of persons in each state" must be counted every 10 years to determine congressional representation and how presidents are elected. It's that simple – everyone must be counted.
But right now, Missouri A.G. Catherine Hanaway is trying to change what that very clear constitutional language means.
In a recently filed lawsuit, she not only seeks to exclude undocumented people and temporary visa holders from the upcoming census, but also demands a "redo" of the 2020 Census. Redoing the census and not counting everyone would be devastating. Millions of people would lose access to critical services. Fair representation would be threatened in elections nationwide.

This brazen attack on the census in Missouri isn't the only fight of its kind.
A legal group founded by current White House Deputy Chief of Staff and Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller is also trying to undermine the important work the Census Bureau does to ensure an accurate census and protect census data. If these efforts are successful, not only will communities across the country have their rightful voting power diminished, but an inaccurate population count means that critical resources and funding will not be allocated fairly.
These anti-democracy extremists are relentless in their attacks on our constitution. We must be just as relentless in our attempts to limit their harm and keep our democracy intact.
Thank you so much,
Marina Jenkins
