| Petition to Congress: We urge you to include four critical reforms in the reauthorization of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act: (1) Close the Backdoor Search loophole; (2) Close the Data Broker loophole; (3) Fix the overbroad expansion of Electronic Communications Service Providers; and (4) Facilitate better access to information and amici engagement at the FISA Court. These reforms are necessary to protect privacy and end warrantless surveillance of people in the United States. |
Trump wants Congress to quietly extend his powers to surveil Americans without a warrant.
The government routinely abuses Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) to spy on people in the United States by collecting and searching through electronic communications without a warrant. Trump's federal agencies, like the FBI and NSA, can freely troll through the private emails and texts swept up in mass data collections under Section 702.
Demand Progress joined dozens of organizations and advocates to urge Congress to pass bipartisan fixes to this core mechanism of the mass surveillance state, including closing giant privacy loopholes that leave dangerous powers in the hands of the Trump regime.

Congress passed Section 702 as an expansion of the government's surveillance powers in the name of the War on Terror. It's up for renewal later this year, and critical reforms will help fundamentally alter the U.S. surveillance state and protect our right to privacy.
Lawmakers must close the backdoor search loophole that allows law enforcement agencies to circumvent court orders to search through billions of communications for information about people in the United States.
They must also end the data broker loophole that law enforcement and intelligence agencies abuse to bypass privacy rights by purchasing our sensitive location and online information from data brokers. Even though the Fourth Amendment protects our right to keep our information private, the government is collecting troves of our data without a warrant with the help of Big Tech data brokers.
There is bipartisan support for these reforms. Congress must take this rare opportunity to rein in Trump's FBI, CIA, and NSA, and the federal law enforcement agencies of all future presidents.
Sign the petition: No warrantless surveillance in America! Block reauthorization of FISA unless it includes protections for our privacy.
