Pamela, Last year, residents in Washington, DC's predominately Black Ward 7 and 8 neighborhoods paid $139 a year for Amazon Prime just like everyone else. But they saw their two-day delivery rates drop from over 72% to as low as 24%. An investigation by the DC Attorney General found that Amazon had secretly excluded certain zip codes from receiving Prime benefits. Amazon cited "safety concerns" for its drivers, but failed to notify the 48,000 Prime customers living in Wards 7 and 8 of its discriminatory and inequitable policy.1 Now, DC's Attorney General is suing Amazon, saying Amazon "cannot covertly decide that a dollar in one zip code is worth less than a dollar in another." Every state deserves answers about whether Amazon is deceptively discriminating against its neighborhoods of color. Tell your state's Attorney General to investigate Amazon for "discriminatory and deceptive" practices targeting Black neighborhoods now >> Other investigations into Amazon's practices in cities like New York and Boston uncovered similar disparities in 2016. But despite its promises, Amazon has clearly failed to reform its discriminatory practices. It shouldn't matter which zip code you live in—if you pay for two-day shipping, you should receive two-day shipping. But Prime customers from Black and Brown neighborhoods across the country could be getting unwittingly scammed out of $139 a year. That's not right. Amazon needs to be held accountable for every neighborhood potentially suffering from its discriminatory delivery practices. Tell the Attorney General in your state to investigate now. If they find similar evidence of bias and deception, they must file lawsuits just like DC has done. In an age of rampant corporate greed and deceptive practices, working together to fight back is more important than ever.
