Pamela, Michigan lawmakers are on the cusp of a major vote to fix our broken Electoral College.
With less than a week left in the lame duck session, Michigan lawmakers are considering a bill that would add the state (and it's 15 electoral votes) to the National Popular Vote (NPV) Compact – an agreement between states to award their electoral votes to the candidate that wins the most votes in a presidential election.
NPV is the long-awaited reform our Electoral College desperately needs. And if we get it passed in Michigan, we'll only need a handful more states to join in for it to go into effect.
I can't emphasize enough how important NPV is to achieving a truly representative democracy. As it stands now, presidential candidates only want to campaign in a handful of swing states – ignoring two thirds of the country and discouraging voters from showing up at all in those states.
If passed, no one could become president without the majority of Americans' support – like George W. Bush did in 2000 and Donald Trump in 2016.
And I don't need to tell you how much difference just one presidential term can make: Supreme Court Justices, executive orders, and even declaring war! The stakes are simply too high to allow an individual that didn't win the majority vote into office.
It's no secret we're working in a broken system. But the solution is within reach. Already this year, members like you got NPV passed in Maine; after getting it passed in Minnesota just last year – proving that your action makes a difference.
Right now, is our best opportunity to pass NPV in Michigan and use that win to build momentum in other states.
Our people's lobbyists are working in the Michigan statehouse as you read this, convincing key legislators, educating voters, and making sure we build a critical mass to fix the broken Electoral College. But we can't get this bill across the finish line without you.
Pamela, we can't miss this opportunity. Can I count on you to chip in $3 or whatever you can today to pass NPV in even more states and secure a more representative democracy?

With you by my side, I know that a more representative democracy is possible. Fixing our broken Electoral College system is the first step of many.
Thanks for all you do,
