Millions may have to “show their papers” just to vote

The anti-voter SAVE America Act is a threat to our democracy — we must fight back.

Pamela, do you have your birth certificate handy? I sure don't and it's unlikely that most other Americans can easily access theirs. Yet, under the so-called "SAVE America Act", millions of eligible voters will need to "show their papers" just to participate in democracy.

Proponents of this bill like to pretend that the voting requirements they're suggesting are no big deal. They say, "If you need an ID to rent bowling shoes, then why shouldn't you need one to vote?"

That may sound reasonable until you dig into the details of the bill, even just a little bit. With the SAVE America Act, a regular driver's license wouldn't be enough to register to vote. Neither would a REAL ID nor a military ID by itself. If you changed your last name after marriage like I did, and your paperwork doesn't have your updated legal name, you'll have to jump through major legal hoops to get to the ballot box.

And that's the issue. These barriers are intended to reduce participation in our elections, pure and simple — because anti-democracy forces believe that's the only way they can win. That's unacceptable — and frankly, un-American. With your support, Redistricting Action can stop these blatant attacks on our democracy.

President Trump described voting in America as "the greatest privilege of them all."

That phrase alone highlights the severe problem underlying the SAVE America Act: Voting in America is a right provided to all American citizens, not a privilege bestowed on a select few by the leaders in Washington, D.C.

Right now, this legislation has the support of a simple majority in the Senate. While a bill like this typically requires 60 votes to pass, some lawmakers — who are desperate to make voting harder — are threatening to get rid of the filibuster to force it through.

Now is a moment to get louder and fight back even harder. Make a gift today to strengthen our opposition and efforts to defend representative democracy, in Congress and in the states.

Thank you for answering the call to act,
