As the Deputy Campaigns Director at Redistricting Action, I know how important it is to act quickly when the right to fair representation is being threatened. I want to fill you in on what happened in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s shameful decision that gutted the Voting Rights Act.
This is a longer note from me, so I understand if you don’t have time to read it all right now. Our ability to respond in a moment’s notice is critical — and grassroots donations make that possible.
It was a Wednesday morning.
The minute the ruling dropped, we knew the clock was ticking. Our team had spent months preparing for a worst-case scenario, so we immediately mobilized our activists. In a matter of minutes, we had organized an event that reached tens of thousands of supporters across multiple states.
We knew anti-democracy extremists would waste no time trying to take advantage of this decision.
In Florida, after Gov. Ron DeSantis called a special legislative session to gerrymander the state’s congressional map, Redistricting Action mobilized thousands of Floridian activists to contact their lawmakers. While we weren’t successful in stopping the new gerrymander, the state saw a massive influx of organizing power that isn’t going away — the fair maps movement is working overtime to ensure the governor doesn’t get away with this cynical power grab.
When Georgia called a similar special session, we worked fast to educate voters and provide resources for them to fight back. I’m proud to say that the anti-democracy politicians saw this outpouring of resistance and scrapped their plan to change their maps ahead of the midterm election.
Pamela, there’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to defending democracy. Sometimes it is about contacting voters directly, and sometimes it’s about broader outreach to empower citizens to stand up for their voting rights. The power of grassroots organizing is in people coming together — that’s why it’s so effective.
