In honor of the VRA’s legacy: 

Pamela, Sixty-one years ago today, the Voting Rights Act (VRA) was signed into law. But the VRA hasn’t been at its full intended strength for over a decade. Year after year, the Supreme Court has gutted more and more provisions of this landmark law, making it possible for more and more states to restrict access to the ballot box. And this April, the Court knocked down the VRA’s shield against racist voting maps.  Anti-voter lawmakers immediately took advantage of the ruling. They eliminated a Black opportunity district in Louisiana. They eliminated a Black opportunity district in Alabama. They eliminated the ONLY Black opportunity district in Tennessee. They are on a mission to weaken Black voting power and usher in Jim Crow 2.0. Georgia was supposed to be next. But with activists like you powering our organizing, we mobilized people to speak out across the state, with hundreds packing the Capitol to protest the beginning of the map-rigging session. Lawmakers backed off — for now. But the Lieutenant Governor is already talking about trying again in November. We’re also supporting allies across Mississippi who are fighting hard to hold off new racist voting maps. And we’re continuing to fund vital voter protection, education, and outreach work across the South. It’s all hands on deck. We have the power to defend the legacy of the VRA and push back against the surge in map-rigging and voter suppression — but only if we keep fighting side by side.
