Pamela: Congress could soon add a dangerous provision to expand and empower ICE’s violence — violence that killed two more people last month — to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

Proponents of the Combating Organized Retail Crime Act (CORCA) claim they’re focused on decreasing retail theft. In reality, CORCA would sneakily hand DHS, ICE’s parent agency, even broader authority to collect, analyze, and share our personal information.

More facial recognition. More data-sharing between police and corporations. More opportunities for reckless ICE agents to terrorize our communities with violence.

That’s the world we’ll live in if the Senate adds this dangerous provision as an amendment to the final bill. But with the Senate NDAA currently stalled, we have a critical opportunity to push lawmakers to keep CORCA out of the final bill.

Stopping the addition of CORCA to the NDAA will require all of us joining the movement partners already speaking out. We need to flood Senate offices today with messages demanding they reject deepening an era of ICE violence and impunity.

Tell Your Senators: Stop empowering ICE! Don’t bury a provision that would expand ICE’s authority even further in the NDAA.

Pamela, giving DHS more power to violate our rights won’t make anyone safer. As Aiden Cotter, director of Federal Advocacy at our partner Vera Action, stated: “CORCA is not a safety bill, it’s a surveillance bill.”[1]

We have watched ICE terrorize our neighborhoods across the nation, from Minneapolis earlier this year to Texas and Maine just last month, where Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Joan Sebastian Guerrero were shot and killed by immigration agents.

The last thing Congress should be doing is putting ICE at the center of a significant new federal law enforcement hub and heightening its ability to racially profile.

A law like CORCA doesn’t belong in the NDAA or anywhere else. That’s why the time to draw a line in the sand is NOW, before a harmful idea like this becomes law.

Here’s where things stand: The House attached the devastating SAVE Act to its version of the NDAA at the last minute. If we don’t act fast, we could see the Senate tie another totally unrelated but highly damaging CORCA Act to this must-pass bill.

But right now, the Senate NDAA is currently stalled thanks to a filibuster-proof majority of Senators who we’ve helped push to refuse to advance the bill. With the bill momentarily on ice, we need to get loud. Now. Make sure your Senators hear your demands to keep people safe, and make sure they know your eyes are on this issue.

The Senate needs to know that the American people reject this dangerous expansion of DHS and ICE power. Send your message today demanding lawmakers stop expanding ICE’s authority by refusing to attach CORCA to the NDAA.
