Dear Pamela,
Right now, the Trump administration is carrying out mass detentions and deportations, deploying federal agents into our communities, stripping away people's legal rights, and fast-tracking people through immigration courts without a lawyer.
Today, Sen. Adam Schiff reintroduced the Fairness to Freedom Act in the Senate, which is sponsored by Rep. Norma Torres in the House. The bill would guarantee legal representation for anyone facing deportation who can't afford a lawyer on their own. Use your voice to help make this legislation a reality.
Tell Congress to pass the Fairness to Freedom Act.
People facing deportation do not have the right to an attorney in immigration court unless they can pay for one themselves. This means that many people, including children, are forced to appear alone against trained government attorneys—sometimes in a language they don't understand.
Our research found that people with a lawyer are nearly five times more likely to be granted relief from deportation than people without one.
More than 80 jurisdictions have already created publicly funded legal representation programs, but it will take national legislation to make universal representation a reality—especially as this administration works to strip away due process protections.
Tell Congress to pass the Fairness to Freedom Act and ensure that everyone has access to legal representation and a fair day in court.
Thank you for taking action,
Shayna
