Pamela,
Today’s the 65th birthday of one of the co-founders of this fair maps movement: President Barack Obama!
To celebrate and thank him for his years of leadership, including his ongoing work to fight for democracy, we’re putting together a birthday card with signatures and messages from this grassroots team.
I’m nostalgic today, thinking about how, eighteen years ago, I packed up my car and drove to North Carolina to be a part of Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign.
My story is hardly unique. He ignited hope and action in so many people across America, inspiring us to do whatever we could to make change.
I went on to serve in the Obama White House. And I was honored to join the team here after he and Attorney General Eric Holder started Redistricting Action.
It’s been nearly a decade since they kicked off this work — and knowing what we know now, it is absolutely essential to have a strong grassroots team fighting back against egregious gerrymandering and ensuring cynical politicians can’t decimate the right to vote.
Without President Obama's leadership and vision, Redistricting Action — and so much of the fair maps movement — simply wouldn't be what they are today. I know I wouldn't be where I am.
Thank you,
Biz
