Pamela: No matter how you cut it, we've never been closer to shattering a 30-year moratorium on tests that aim to create weapons capable of global annihilation.

Officials may be racing to walk back Trump's dangerous idea to restart nuclear weapons testing, but the White House is doubling down on its troubling assertion that "all decision-making authority lies with the President."[1]

Trump would use that authority to supercharge a nuclear arms race that only ends in disaster. That's why our team is working on an ambitious, multi-pronged, and crucially important campaign to avoid a doomsday scenario: Derail attempts to restart testing before they begin, urge any DC decision-maker who will listen to hold the line on arms control treaties, and fight tooth and nail to block every effort to pad the Pentagon budget with money for more dangerous, unnecessary, and unaffordable weapons. Can we count on you to join us?

Shortly after Trump recklessly instructed the Pentagon to "immediately" begin testing nuclear weapons last month, the impacts began to ripple. Within days, Russian President Vladimir Putin responded with his own threats to restart testing.

These threats come at an incredibly fragile moment, Pamela: in less than 70 days, the last treaty capping the world's largest nuclear arsenals is set to expire. The New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty and its predecessors have limited both U.S. AND Russian nuclear arsenals since 1991. Without a new agreement, either government could soon build and deploy as many nukes as they want.

Restarting tests right now will only fan the flames of a fire that could destroy us all by emboldening other nations, accelerating a global arms race, and dragging the world back toward the brink of nuclear catastrophe.

Pamela, the good news is that champions in Congress have already introduced legislation to block any return to explosive nuclear testing, and we're working tirelessly to avoid any attempt to fund this irresponsible new Cold War.

That means we CAN stop this. Here's how we'll do it:

  • Overwhelm lawmakers with demands against allocating even a single dollar towards nuclear testing.
  • Elevate the cautionary voices of impacted communities — whose water, land, and bodies were poisoned as a result of decades' worth of U.S. nuclear tests.
  • Work to block ANY effort to increase the Pentagon budget to fund more dangerous weapons.

Nuclear scientists are unequivocal: there is nothing to gain from resuming nuclear testing — and everything to lose.

A future with more nuclear weapons is a fate we can — and must — avoid. We owe it to ourselves and future generations to stop this nightmare from unfolding further.

Thank you for working for peace,
The Win Without War team
