Shortly after Trump recklessly instructed the Pentagon to "immediately" begin testing nuclear weapons last month, the impacts began to ripple. Within days, Russian President Vladimir Putin responded with his own threats to restart testing.

These threats come at an incredibly fragile moment, Pamela: in less than 70 days, the last treaty capping the world's largest nuclear arsenals is set to expire. The New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty and its predecessors have limited both U.S. AND Russian nuclear arsenals since 1991. Without a new agreement, either government could soon build and deploy as many nukes as they want.

Restarting tests right now will only fan the flames of a fire that could destroy us all by emboldening other nations, accelerating a global arms race, and dragging the world back toward the brink of nuclear catastrophe.
