Pamela,
When you think of domestic terrorism, you don't think of local nonprofits trying to help their communities. Neither do we. But the Trump administration does.
The sole focus of Trump's National Security Presidential Memorandum is to intimidate and silence both free speech and the freedom of the press. In this memo, Trump orders agencies to investigate or penalize individuals and groups based on their beliefs, rather than their actions. This memo authorizes the IRS to strip nonprofits of their tax-exempt status.
Anything they deem as "anti-American," "anti-capitalist," and "anti-Christian" will be targeted. And we know what that means. Any nonprofit that doesn't follow the Trump ethos will be targeted.
The stakes are extremely high. Most nonprofits – and newsrooms – would be unable to survive if the IRS commissioner actually follows through on the threats of this memo.
Nonprofits helping children, combatting hunger, fighting against the corrupt criminal justice system, and more are all at risk here. We know the Trump administration is willing to stoop that low to consider these organizations "domestic terror organizations." These groups are trying to improve the lives of millions of Americans; they're not a threat to our national security.
The IRS has the opportunity to take a stand against the Trump administration and their quest to do as much damage as possible. They can do the right thing. That's why we need to tell the IRS that they should not punish nonprofit organizations and newsrooms for expressing their constitutional rights.
Thank you,
Mike Phelan
