Sign the petition: Conversion therapy is ABUSE and has caused irreparable harm to already vulnerable LGBTQ+ youth for decades. It must be banned NOW.
"Whenever I remembered the treatment I'd had, I would start physically shaking... I'd still have flashbacks from my [conversion] therapy sessions 40 years later.'1
"It is still difficult to see how I am worthy of love."2
Dear MoveOn member,
These are just two stories in a sea of stories shared by people who were abused in conversion therapy as LGBTQ+ youth. It's heartbreaking and unacceptable. It is no surprise that, in a time where MAGA Republicans are doing everything they can to attack and harm LGBTQ+ youth, they are now trying to strike down bans on conversion therapy—risking the safety and well-being of LGBTQ+ youth nationwide.3
Andra, we cannot let this happen and need to take action before it's too late. Will you sign the petition to demand that bans on conversion therapy NOT be reversed?
Conversion therapy is a cruel attempt to force LGBTQ+ kids to deny their identity, leading to higher rates of depression and anxiety.4 There are decades of scientific evidence and countless survivor testimonies that attest to the fact that conversion therapy destroys lives and shatters families.5
This is URGENT. If the MAGA-rigged Supreme Court rules that conversion therapy isn't harmful and the psychologist in the case can use it for clients, states across the country could lose their ability to protect LGBTQ+ youth from a practice condemned by every major medical and mental health organization.
Conversion therapy bans cannot be reversed. LGBTQ+ youth are counting on us to protect them. Click here to sign the petition.
This case is being pushed by the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), whose record of anti-LGBTQ+ activism includes supporting the criminalization of LGBTQ+ relationships, defending state-sanctioned sterilization of transgender people abroad, fighting to ban books about the LGBTQ+ community, and blocking life-saving care for transgender people.6 ADF's extremist agenda would erase LGBTQ+ people from public life and gut vital protections for children and families.
Colorado's conversion therapy ban, like those in other states, simply prohibits licensed professionals from using their role to push predetermined outcomes of denying a young person's authentic self. It does not ban supportive counseling; it protects youth from dangerous, distressing, and disproven tactics. State power to regulate licensed health care exists to keep patients safe—not empower ideological crusades.
The outcome of this case will echo for generations. LGBTQ+ youth deserve safety, respect, and unconditional support. No child should ever be told they need to "change" to be worthy of love.
We must continue to do everything we can to protect LGBTQ+ youth so they can grow old safely and live happy, fulfilled lives with support. Part of protecting them means ensuring that conversion therapy bans are NOT reversed by MAGA Republicans. Will you add your name to the petition?
SCOTUS even deciding to hear oral arguments on this case is disastrous. We need thousands of people to take action to condemn conversion therapy and stop conversion therapy as a "treatment" anywhere in America.
If the Supreme Court sides with far-right groups and ignores the expert consensus among scientists, conversion therapy bans have the potential to be overturned in 20 states across the country.7
Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along: No free speech claim justifies allowing therapists to inflict grave harm on vulnerable children. We say NO to conversion therapy for LGBTQ+ youth.
Thanks for all you do.
