We already know that corporations are using AI to fire staff and lower wages. But it's even more insidious than that: Companies are rolling out AI that uses our sensitive data to deliver "hyper-personalized" prices.
Delta, the nation's largest airline, recently told lawmakers they don't use this "personalized pricing." But journalists found that Delta – and other major airlines – are working with AI consultants to increase prices. So you know when you're looking for a Delta flight and your price is higher than it was yesterday? Yup, it's because of AI.
Costs are rising everywhere and it's a step too far knowing that AI companies have our personal information and are using it against us. Tell your representatives to create and support legislation that will put an end to these predatory pricing practices.
We're familiar with surge pricing. We see it when we order an Uber. But now, companies that provide essential services, grocery stores like Kroger, plan to use electronic price tags on its shelves. That means you can't accurately budget your grocery run.
Who's monitoring this surveillance? How do we know these companies aren't increasing prices for protected minorities and lowering them for white people? There's no accountability.
Companies are not using this strategy to lower prices; they're making everything even more affordable. And we know it won't stop here. What's next, pharmacies using dynamic pricing to change the prices of lifesaving prescriptions?
Our country is living through an affordability crisis, Pamela. We can't risk companies unpredictably raising prices based on the algorithm. Congress can – and should – do something. Write to your representative today to tell them to stop these predatory pricing practices.
In solidarity,
Mike Phelan
