Dear Pamela, Imagine being forced to stand alone in a courtroom, facing the terrifying prospect of deportation without knowing the language and without a lawyer by your side to defend your rights. This is the reality for thousands of people in U.S. immigration courts every single day.
In criminal courts, people are guaranteed a lawyer if they cannot afford one. But in immigration courts, there is no such protection because it is considered a civil matter.
That's why Vera created the SAFE Network—a partnership of local governments, legal providers, and advocates building and implementing publicly funded universal representation programs nationwide. Already, more than 70 jurisdictions, including 14 states, have launched programs that keep families together and communities stronger.
For the next 48 hours, every gift will be doubled to help grow and expand access to representation for people in immigration court. |
The Trump administration's increased use of detention and rapid deportations make people's need for legal representation more urgent than ever before.
Reforming such a massive, entrenched system might seem overwhelming, or even impossible. But we are making progress, and your gift can support the research and advocacy needed to advance a fairer and more just system.
We're working hard to protect the rights of hundreds of thousands of immigrants. And with your help, we'll make universal representation a reality.
In solidarity, Vera Institute of Justice |
Gifts made by midnight on 10/28 will be matched up to $10,000 to fund Vera's Advancing Universal Representation initiative. |
