What's at stake with Article V

Once an Article V Convention is called, everything is on the table.

Pamela, Just six states. That's right, just SIX! That's the tiny number of states that stand between us and the right-wing's disastrous Article V plot. It's an event unprecedented in U.S. history that could mean major constitutional chaos – and could put every right we hold dear under direct threat. Now that the far-right started implementing the worst of Project 2025 - their plan to consolidate power, dismantle our freedoms, and pave the way for oligarchy, we anticipate a major escalation in their drive to rewrite our Constitution. You see, once an Article V Convention is called, everything is on the table. Freedom of the press. Freedom of religion. Free speech. Everything. Many constitutional experts have warned that this is the biggest present threat to our democracy – even under Trump 2.0! But few Americans have even heard of it! Make no mistake: it's happening as we speak, behind closed doors and out of the public eye. We have no choice but to immediately step up our grassroots response to defeat this effort. That's why I'm rushing this alert to you and every member of Common Cause. Wealthy special interest groups like the Koch network and the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) are spending big money to lobby state lawmakers, demanding they vote for an Article V Convention that would radically reshape our U.S. Constitution. And if they are allowed to succeed, unelected, unaccountable delegates could seize total power to write their far right-wing agenda right into our Constitution. Name a constitutional right you care about – free press, reproductive rights, and privacy. Any one of those could be placed on the chopping block if we don't act immediately. And they can lock in far-right economics as permanent fiscal policy through a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution. Believe me, this isn't some plot out of a dystopian novel. This sinister effort is actually underway as I write. There are no rules or guidelines in our current Constitution that can constrain an Article V Convention once it's called. MOST FRIGHTENING OF ALL... if just a handful more states sign on, the secretive, far-right billionaires behind this effort will reach the two-thirds supermajority required to call the convention they need to tear apart our Constitution.
