Tell Congress: Don't hand Trump a blank check to take revenge on his political enemies. REJECT H.R. 9495 at Wednesday's vote >>
Pamela, Congress is about to vote on a dangerous bill that would give President-elect Trump – and any future president – the power to SHUT DOWN any nonprofit organization whose First Amendment-protected speech he deems a threat to the country.
And you know as well as I do how that power would be abused – painting a target on organizations that are peacefully resisting or dissenting from the White House's policies.
But if we don't act quickly, one of the outgoing Congress's final acts could be passing this anti-free speech bill! Believe it or not, in a preliminary vote last week, 52 House Democrats joined nearly every Republican to try to pass it – which means your voice is critical right now. [1]
Pamela, I urgently need your help to stop this attack on our right to dissent. Take Action: Contact your Representative and urge them to reject this dangerous bill >>
This bill, H.R. 9495, is a perfect example of a bill that could look fine at first glance, but has terrible implications. On paper, this bill gives the Treasury Secretary the power to strip tax-exempt status from nonprofits that have "provided support to terrorist organizations."
It's already completely illegal – obviously – for nonprofits to support terrorism.
The truth is, if this bill took effect, the Treasury Secretary would be able to strip tax-exempt status from any nonprofit they want to, without having to disclose any reasoning or evidence used to make their decision.
So in the likely event that President-elect Trump installs a partisan loyalist in the Treasury Department, he could use this bill to retaliate against, and effectively shut down, any nonprofit that he doesn't like – with virtually no oversight!
If you agree Donald Trump – or any other future president – should not be able to take revenge against organizations just for disagreeing with him, join me in urging Congress to REJECT this harmful bill before Wednesday's vote >>
Thanks for all you do,
