While accepting his award as the Changemaker of the Year, LeVar spoke powerfully about the work we have in front of us over these next four years and how vitally important it will be to counter attempts by Trump and his cronies to oppress us by expanding our knowledge and sharing the gift of literature with as many people as possible, because, in his words, "literacy is liberation."

We already know that Trump's administration, and Republicans in states across the country emboldened by his win, will redouble their efforts to block the teaching of accurate American history and attempt to control the minds of young people by banning books that can expand their worldviews and build connections with people different from themselves.

Just last week, the Florida Department of Education released a 35-page-long list of hundreds of books being banned in schools across the state.1 The list included many powerful and important books such as Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale," "Gender Queer" by Maia Kobabe, and "All Boys Aren't Blue" by George M. Johnson.

Unsurprisingly, many of the banned books tackle issues including race, gender and queer identity, and women's rights.

These bans are blatant attempts by the right to push marginalized communities further into the shadows and rewrite an American history that fits their white Christian nationalist worldview.

As we head into these next four years, it will be more important than ever to stand up for free speech and expression, do everything we can to prevent these bans from going into effect, and educate people across the country about the terrifying antidemocratic policies of the right.

Ready to join us in this work? Click here to order your "LeVar Burton Says Read Banned Books" T-shirt today and wear it proudly and in defiance of the right's efforts to ban books.

Thanks for all you do.
