Pamela, after news broke that Donald Trump is nominating someone as extreme, disgraced, and unqualified as Matt Gaetz for his Attorney General, Common Cause members responded in an extraordinary way.
Hundreds of messages poured in – folks like you asking, "How could this happen?" or "Is this for real?" or, most importantly, "How can I help stop this?"
It's no surprise people are alarmed: Gaetz is totally unfit for the job, and his nomination represents a serious threat to the fair and equal enforcement of the law in our nation.
As of this morning, our rapid response petition has over 24,545 signatures – which we'll be delivering to the Capitol once confirmation hearings begin. And between now and then, we're going to make sure every single American learns that this is not a candidate who values equality, justice, or our rights.
Pamela, this nomination marks the first major pro-democracy struggle of Trump's second presidency. And we're ready to leave it all on the field with your help. Already, we're mobilizing our volunteer teams in the states whose senators represent the key votes on Gaetz's confirmation.
Matt Gaetz supported the January 6th insurrection, [1] pushed extremist anti-voter policies (even threatening a government shutdown to force them through!), [2] and signaled support for white supremacist groups like the Proud Boys. [3] His confirmation would deal serious harm to American democracy.
Trump has already proven with his executive appointments this week that he'll prioritize billionaires and loyalists over his promises to "drain the swamp" – and there aren't many people in Washington who've sworn as much fealty to Donald Trump as Matt Gaetz.
PLUS… the President-elect has already floated the idea of short-circuiting the entire confirmation process – installing controversial nominees like Gaetz through a "recess appointment" that would throw out one of the key checks and balances Congress has over the executive branch. [4]
