Democracy is under threat in Texas. With their new voter suppression law and racially gerrymandered electoral map, Governor Greg Abbott and his allies are coming dangerously close to their goal: a Texas where people no longer get to choose the leaders who represent them.
To win this race on such an uneven playing field, we need to build nothing less than the most powerful grassroots campaign that Texas has ever seen.
Not every candidate could take on this challenge. But we know for a fact that Beto can. During his insurgent Senate run in 2018, he inspired people across the nation and turned out more Democratic voters in Texas than anyone in history.
It's been a tough year in Texas as we suffer the consequences of living in a state where our democracy is constantly and systematically undermined.
It's a state where legislators passed the most egregious anti-abortion, anti-women's health care law in the country, which places a $10,000 bounty on anyone who supports someone trying to exercise their basic right to control their own health and shape their own future.
It's a state where anyone can carry a gun with no background check and no training, despite the tragic legacy of gun violence and mass shootings in Texas — from El Paso, to Sutherland Springs, to Midland-Odessa, to Santa Fe, and too many other Texas communities.
Texas is better than this. We can and should take better care of one another and build something better for ourselves and those who come after us. Beto is running this campaign because we believe we can channel our anger, hurt, and fear into something constructive that can help us live up to our state's potential.
If we make sure we're on the ground every day registering and connecting with voters — especially those who have traditionally been left out or written off — we can ultimately win Texas and elect a Governor who truly represents the people of this state. But only if all of us work together to make it happen. That's why, as Beto's campaign manager, I'm asking: Will you chip in today to help us do the hard work necessary to overcome GOP-led voter suppression in Texas?
