Dear Andra,
It's Giving Tuesday, so we're writing to tell you about a way to support MoveOn and our mission that you might not know about: making a tax-deductible donation to the MoveOn Education Fund, a separate 501(c)(3) charitable organization.
The MoveOn Education Fund is a tax-deductible organization that advances some of our hardest hitting campaigns, including the Families Belong Together effort against the Trump administration's policy of family separation at the border.
The MoveOn Education Fund works to secure economic equality, human rights, democracy, gender equity, racial justice, immigrant rights, and more.
Your contribution could potentially get you a special tax deduction of up to $300 (or $600 for married couples) in 2021, if you take the standard deduction!1 If you itemize, you can potentially deduct even more.2
In addition to making a tax-deductible gift of $40, $100, $300, $600, or whatever you can afford, there are many ways to give to the MoveOn Education Fund, including donating stock and cryptocurrency, through a donor-advised fund, and with planned giving. More details are below.
1. If you have a donor-advised fund, you can direct its operator to make a gift to the MoveOn Education Fund. Click here to get started. (We've partnered with FreeWill to make doing this easier for you.)
2. If you own stock that's gone up in value, you can donate it—and pay no capital gains tax. The MoveOn Education Fund will receive the full value of your stock donation, and you won't owe taxes on any capital gains, whether you itemize or not. To donate appreciated stock, click here. (Our partnership with FreeWill helps make it easy to do.)
3. If you own cryptocurrency that's gone up in value, you can donate it—and pay no capital gains tax. To donate crypto, click here. (We've partnered with the Giving Block, which will process your gift, and the MoveOn Education Fund will receive the full value of your crypto donation.)
4. If you already have a will, you can include the MoveOn Education Fund in your estate plan. Click here for details. (If you don't yet have a will, and for other estate planning options, scroll down to the postscript at the bottom of this email.)
5. And if you are over 70 and a half years old and have an IRA, you can make a qualified charitable distribution to the MoveOn Education Fund. Required minimum distributions, which were suspended for 2020, are back in 2021. One great way to meet your minimum-distribution requirement is to donate some or all of it to the MoveOn Education Fund. To get started on your qualified charitable distribution, click here. (Our partnership with FreeWill makes this process easy.)
No matter how you choose to give, we are extremely grateful to you. Some of the most impactful projects that MoveOn members have ever done were made possible through gifts to the MoveOn Education Fund. And the need to invest in our collective future is greater than ever. So, as you plan your charitable donations for the end of this year, please consider including us in your giving plan.
With your continued support, we will continue to deliver on our shared commitment to building a country where everyone can truly thrive.
We'll fight on every front: by working to rebuild and restructure our nation's economy to make it more fair and equitable, protecting voting rights and our democracy, dismantling systemic racism, addressing the climate crisis, and so much more.
Thanks for all you do and all the ways you give. We are incredibly grateful to you.
–Kelly, Jennifer, Manny, Heather, and the rest of the team
P.S. Everyone deserves the peace of mind that an estate plan brings. Did you know that MoveOn Civic Action, a 501(c)(4) non-profit, accepts bequests? If you already have a will, we hope that you will consider adding MoveOn to it. Click here for details on how to include MoveOn Civic Action in your estate plan. And if you do not yet have a will, or want to create a new one, it's easy to make a will through FreeWill, an online service that has already empowered over 400,000 Americans to create their wills and establish their legacies. The tool is safe and secure, free to use, and will guide you through the process in 20 minutes or less. If you do not have a will, click here to create your free will and leave a legacy!
