Trump's work requirements for Medicaid are cruel. For example, stroke survivors with aphasia who struggle to speak, read, or complete complex paperwork are being pushed off Medicaid because they may not be able to fill out the exemption paperwork.
Pamela, this is an absurd, Kafkaesque nightmare masquerading as a health care system.
Why should people who are struggling need to go through miles of red tape, including new administrative hurdles, unclear federal guidance, and rapidly changing deadlines in order to get things that they are entitled to as Americans. Now, stroke survivors have to navigate a patchwork of inconsistent decisions that leave vulnerable people at risk of losing lifesaving care.
Tell Dr. Oz: Stop this absurd bureaucratic healthcare nightmare!
We need to reverse these cuts; and Dr. Mehmet Oz, has the power to fix this immediately. He can issue national guidance exempting stroke survivors with aphasia from Medicaid work requirements and extending recertification windows nationwide. And guess what? He can do this all without Congressional approval.
While we're fighting the Medicaid cuts that are hurting millions of people, we need to protect people who are having difficulties accessing their benefits. People deserve to access their benefits, without a work requirement.
We know that Trump is a cruel, heartless person. But Dr. Oz has an opportunity to show common decency and protect stroke survivors from losing coverage they desperately need.
No matter where they live, stroke survivors deserve stability and consistent protections in every state. That's why we need to send a direct message to Dr. Oz to exempt stroke survivors with aphasia from Medicaid work requirements and also extend recertification timelines nationwide.
Thank you,
Mike Phelan
