Dear Andra,
As one of MoveOn's dedicated donors, we wanted to take this opportunity to share with you some highlights of MoveOn's work over the past month—and what a month it has been!
At the beginning of July, we all watched as Republicans in Congress abandoned their constituents and bowed down to Trump by passing a bill which will kick 17 million people off their health insurance and cut hundreds of billions of dollars in funding for health care and food assistance programs—all to give trillions of dollars in tax cuts to billionaires.
Republicans know just how unpopular those cuts are, which is why they have spent the last month hiding from their constituents and lying about what they voted for—but we are not letting them get away with it. This month we ramped up our work to hold these Republicans accountable and build the grassroots power we will need to defeat them in next year's midterm elections.
HOLDING REPUBLICANS ACCOUNTABLE FOR MEDICAID CUTS
We faced a big challenge after the passage of the budget bill: While millions of voters across the country will be impacted, many of them don't realize they are at risk, because they do not know that their health care coverage is provided by Medicaid.
The reason why is simple: In 31 states, Medicaid plans are not actually called "Medicaid." States have rebranded their Medicaid programs with names like "Medi-Cal," "Health First Colorado," "Cardinal Care," and more. And the Republicans in Congress who voted to rip health care away from their constituents to give trillions of dollars in tax cuts to the ultra wealthy are desperately hoping that, because of those differences in names, the people in their districts won't realize what they did.
That is why MoveOn launched a billboard campaign in some of the most important swing districts across the country to make sure voters know exactly what their Republican members of Congress voted for. For each billboard, we used the name of the state Medicaid plan and indicated exactly how many people in the state will be impacted. They looked like this:
These billboards are a strategic and impactful start to what will become the biggest midterm election program in MoveOn's history.
RECRUITING A NEW GENERATION OF PROGRESSIVE LEADERS
One of the takeaways from the 2024 election was that many left-leaning voters are ready for new voices in politics—candidates who buck the status quo, stand up to attacks, and push for real change.
That's why in July, MoveOn announced our partnership with Run for Something to recruit and support young progressive leaders to run for office and create the changes we so desperately need. In far too many elections, from local school board seats all the way to Congress, incumbents run unopposed or do not face real challengers, and we think it's about time to change that.
Together, we will work with Run for Something to identify potential candidates, give them the training they need to run a campaign, and then support them during their elections to build the coalitions they will need to win.
TELLING VOTERS THAT WE WON'T BACK DOWN!
Throughout July, the MoveOn team was also hard at work to prepare for the first stop on our "Won't Back Down" tour, where we invited some of our favorite progressive champions to come on the road with us in some of the most closely watched districts for next year's midterm elections.
This tour is an opportunity to build energy and organizing power in key districts where MoveOn will be working hard to turn out voters next year. Our first stop was just last weekend in Arizona, where we were joined by Senator Chris Murphy and Representatives Jasmine Crockett and Yassamin Ansari, as well as MeidasTouch's Adam Mockler, who served as our emcee!
The crowd was electric, and we can't wait to see even more MoveOn members and our friends on tour later this summer!
This work would not be possible without the dedicated support of MoveOn's donors, Andra, and we are so grateful to have you with us.
Thank you.
If you would like to make another generous donation to MoveOn, the most impactful way to support us is by becoming one of our dedicated monthly supporters.
