Pamela,
When Donald Trump returned to the Oval Office, he teamed up with the richest man on earth to rip our government services completely apart. And because of the so-called "Department of Government Efficiency" dismantling of critical systems and departments, we're already seeing the effects of Trump and Elon Musk's goal of ripping apart our infrastructure.
Trump laid off around 600 staffers at the National Weather Service, including the "warning coordination meteorologist" for the Austin/San Antonio office. And that position remained vacant while we saw the deadly flood waters rise in Texas. When an emergency hit, no one was there to answer the call. Americans deserve better, especially when disaster strikes. Tell Congress to demand that these essential agencies be restored.
Now, as hurricane season begins, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which monitors atmospheric weather events and provides crucial predictive data, will have 1,000 fewer staffers than it did last season. That means millions of Americans' lives will be at risk because the agency won't be fully staffed.
And somehow, even worse, FEMA, the federal agency that helps communities recover from emergencies just like hurricanes and floods, cut its staff by 20%. Now, when millions of Americans are impacted by natural disasters, they won't receive the help they need – or deserve.
As a country, we deserve better. We deserve to be warned of natural disasters, we deserve to feel safe in our neighborhoods and if the worst happens, we deserve the help. But thanks to the cruelty of the Trump administration, these agencies aren't fully staffed and able to respond to emergencies. Tell Congress that we deserve better and that these agencies need to be fully restored.
Thank you,
Mike Phelan
