Pamela – first, we saw the Marines take the streets of Los Angeles on Trump's orders. Now, the National Guard is all over Washington DC's streets. And Trump is threatening to spread it to Chicago, Baltimore, and all over the country if people don't bend to his will.
These are unprecedented moves in response to peaceful protests against immigration raids, but they claim to have deployed them to protect federal property and personnel. But Kristi Noem said it bluntly, that they're deploying them to "liberate the city from the socialists and burdensome leadership" of the governor and mayor.
Whatever insane rationale they come up with, the administration is still breaking the law. A nearly 150-year-old law prohibits the use of the U.S. military for domestic law enforcement, except when specifically authorized by the Constitution or an act of Congress. But clearly, the Trump administration doesn't care about following the law.
State attorneys general across the country should join together in taking legal action to stop the Trump administration from continuing to erode the laws and norms with the domestic use of the military. Tell them to keep the military off American streets.
California's attorney general is suing the Trump administration in federal court to put an end to this illegal use of the military. But we're seeing tens of thousands of troops in at least five states (and counting), so at this rate, we might be seeing a military takeover of our streets.
Our administration is currently militarizing the southern border and assisting ICE in launching draconian crackdowns across the country. It's only getting worse, [Firstname/friend]. And it will continue to get worse if we don't speak out against this illegal action.
Tell our state attorneys general to join together in taking legal action to stop Trump from taking apart the Constitution piece by piece.
Thank you,
Mike Phelan
