Armored military vehicles running red lights and causing car accidents. 2,000 armed troops on patrol. Military checkpoints across the city.
This is what DC looks like amidst Trump's National Guard deployments, Pamela.
Under current law, Trump's takeover automatically expires after 30 days — but Trump's lackeys in Congress are rushing to extend his DC takeover. Two pieces of legislation are raising alarms: Rep. Anna Paulina Luna's (R-FL) H.J.Res. 114 would declare a "crime emergency" in DC and allow Trump's takeover to continue indefinitely; Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) has introduced H.R. 5105 to amend the DC Home Rule Act to automatically extend any emergency period in DC to six months — and to apply that new standard retroactively to the current sham "emergency."
Pamela, Trump's armed troops aren't making anyone safer. If Republicans successfully push these bills through the House, only united Senate opposition can stop Trump's authoritarian power grab — and that's why we're putting every lawmaker on alert today. Congress must reject ANY efforts to strip away DC's autonomy and normalize Trump's militarized power grab — and it'll take pressure from constituents like you to make that happen.

Let's be clear: There's no justification for Trump's DC takeover. While he's tried to paint DC as a violent hellscape that needs rescuing, the fact is, at the start of the Trump administration, crime was actually the lowest it's been in 30 years.[1]
Mobilizing federal agents and the National Guard was never about safety. It was about control and political retribution. And unless we push back with all we've got, Trump's not stopping with our nation's capitol.
DC is a testing ground. As Trump weaponizes our military as pawns against the very people they've sworn to protect, he's threatening to extend this authoritarian power grab to cities like Baltimore and Chicago.
The good news is that Congress can help put an end to this. Under current law, Trump's takeover has a 30-day expiration date. Unfortunately, MAGA Republicans are already working to extend it, intervene in DC's Home Rule, dismiss the will of its residents, and subvert the constitutional limits designed to keep any president from claiming unchecked power.
But even if Speaker Johnson rams one of these resolutions through the House next month, a united opposition can defeat it in the Senate. Since these resolutions will need 60 votes to pass, we need to ensure 41 senators stay together and put the Constitution over party or president.
Pamela, the good news is that we've done exactly that before. But to do it again, we'll need a wave of activists from across the country, working together to pressure their members of Congress. That wave starts right here.
Thank you for working for peace,
The Win Without War team
P.S. As the authoritarians ramp up their tactics, it's never been more important that we stand in solidarity with communities under attack to defend and build a future that can work for all of us. Tomorrow, September 1, join an #WorkersOverBillionaires Labor Day event near you!
