Pamela,
Yesterday, PEN America Florida joined us for our monthly Democracy Seminar to shine a light on an issue facing our state: book bans and attacks on public education.
Here's the reality:
Florida leads the nation in the number of books banned from classrooms and libraries.
Politicians are censoring teachers and restricting what students can learn, often erasing the voices of Black, Brown, and LGBTQ+ communities.
Parents, librarians, and young people who speak up are being dismissed or even targeted for simply defending the right to read and learn.
This is not just about books on a shelf. It's about whether children will grow up in schools that prepare them for the future, or schools where politics and censorship dictate what knowledge is allowed. When communities are silenced, democracy is weakened.
That's why we're asking you to take action today.
Teachers and librarians deserve respect, and children deserve to learn about their world. Send a letter to your state elected officials demanding they stand up for free expression and oppose book bans.
By speaking out, you're joining parents, students, and educators across Florida who are demanding classrooms that reflect the truth and honor every child's freedom to learn. Together, we can protect public education and build a democracy where every voice is heard. Florida's classrooms should be places of truth, diversity, and free expression.
Thank you for being a voice for democracy,
Franceska Edouard, Florida Organizer
