Pamela,
Twenty years ago, Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. More than 1,800 lives were lost, and thousands of families -- especially Black and Brown residents -- were displaced, abandoned, and left without the support they needed. Today, we remember their lives with compassion and honor the resilience of survivors who rebuilt against all odds.
Katrina wasn't just a "natural disaster." Its devastation was made worse by a lack of preparedness and political neglect. And now, we're faced with a new, sobering reality: Fueled by the climate crisis, hurricanes are becoming stronger, more frequent, and harder to predict. This month, Hurricane Erin -- one of the fastest-strengthening storms on record -- was a stark reminder of the growing risks.
And while we should be preparing and building stronger responses to this reality, Donald Trump is gutting hurricane preparedness and disaster response programs. He laid off hundreds of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) employees, left nearly half of America's weather offices understaffed, and cut FEMA's disaster response staff. These reckless actions leave communities more vulnerable when the next storm hits.
At Climate Power, we know what's at stake. That's why we're making clear the connection between extreme weather disasters and the climate crisis that fuels them, while holding climate deniers accountable for withholding urgent resources that save lives. We're demanding investments in resilience that protect every family. Katrina stands as a painful example of what happens when leaders ignore science and put politics over people -- and we cannot let it happen again.
This anniversary, we invite you to honor Katrina's victims and survivors with action:
We honor the lives lost, stand with survivors, and partner with organizations working every day across the country to prepare communities for the next storm. By taking action today, we can ensure that no community is left behind when the next climate disaster strikes.
In remembrance and solidarity,
Climate Power
