Alligator Alcatraz is being treated like a meme. People might not take it seriously with its merch and actual alligators brought in, but the difference between Alligator Alcatraz and Alligator Auschwitz is smaller than you think, Pamela.
Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis have taken a decommissioned airport in the Everglades and illegally built an ICE detention camp intended to imprison up to 5,000 immigrants. And these people will be snatched off the streets illegally and without due process by ICE, and then imprisoned in this unsafe detention center.
The companies building this detention center have donated millions of dollars to Trump, DeSantis and other Florida Republicans. Everyone is going to be gaining something out of this deal, except the people taken off the streets and incarcerated without due process. Demand Congress to investigate the private prison contractors involved and shut down Alligator Alcatraz.
Alligator Alcatraz is being built on land surrounded by the Big Cypress National Preserve, which has been home for the Miccosukee and Seminole Nations for centuries. Federal contractors didn't consult either tribe and all environmental regulations were tossed aside, all to make sure this detention camp was built as quickly as possible.
It's expected to cost at least $450 million a year to run this facility. That money could be going to feeding children, funding Medicaid, and more. Instead, it'll be paying for dangerous conditions on sacred land.
People's lives will be – and are – at risk in this dangerous facility. Congress needs to investigate Alligator Alcatraz and hold these private contractors accountable for violations of human rights, environmental regulations, and tribal sovereignty. Send your message to Congress now demanding action on Alligator Alcatraz.
Thank you,
Mike Phelan
