Pamela, We're writing to share an important update on Vera's class-action lawsuit.
Vera has been leading a legal challenge after the Trump administration terminated $820 million in essential funding for community safety grants alongside our partners from the Center for Children and Youth Justice, FORCE Detroit, Health Resources in Action, and Stop AAPI Hate. We brought this lawsuit on behalf of hundreds of organizations across the country whose awards were abruptly terminated alongside Vera's.
Last week, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia dismissed our complaint. While discouraging, this ruling is not the end of our fight.
In his ruling, Judge Mehta called the DOJ's actions "shameful" and "likely to harm communities and individuals vulnerable to crime and violence." He went on to say, "No federal agency, especially the Department of Justice, should conduct itself in such manner."
We couldn't agree more.
With the help of our attorneys at Democracy Forward and Perry Law, Vera and our fellow plaintiffs are appealing. We are also seeking an injunction that would restore funding for all affected organizations while the appeal is pending. |
