The “deadliest day yet” for people seeking aid

Without a ceasefire in place, people in Gaza and the dozens of hostages still held captive are living in hell. ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏  ‌͏

Pamela:

Sunday marked the "deadliest day yet" for starving people seeking aid in Gaza, as the Israeli military opened fire on yet another crowd of people, killing at least 85.[1] This comes just days after 20 people died in a crush at a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) aid distribution center in Khan Younis.[2]

These devastating events are far from one-offs: Last month, Israeli forces killed at least 410 starving people desperately trying to access food at Israeli government-run aid sites across Gaza.[3]

Since the last ceasefire ended, the Israeli government's already-relentless strikes on Gaza only appear to have increased. Tens of thousands of people have died. Meanwhile, Hamas is still holding dozens of people hostage. They've languished for more than 650 days.

The suffering and loss of life are incalculable. But our team is surging amidst reports another ceasefire may be within reach.

Our policy and legislative teams remain deeply engaged with House and Senate staffers on multiple legislative and oversight efforts that could finally force the U.S. government to do more to end the bombing, bring the hostages home, and save lives.

Momentum is growing, and our work is nowhere near done. That's why our team is working 24/7 to ensure Congress acts: Taking back-to-back advocacy meetings, employing attention-grabbing tactics, uplifting stories from civil society groups in the region, and mobilizing the grassroots like never before. But it all takes incredible resources.

Make no mistake, it wasn't bombs and bullets that paused the violence for 42 days earlier this spring. The recent ceasefire saved lives. Hostages returned to their families. Hundreds of trucks were able to bring crucially needed aid into Gaza. Violence across the region slowed dramatically.

Without a ceasefire in place, people in Gaza and the dozens of hostages still held captive are living in hell — and the U.S. government is directly culpable for their suffering. Today, hundreds of thousands of people in Gaza are slowly starving as relentless Israeli military bombings, including with U.S.-made weapons, continue to destroy hospitals, homes filled with families, and schools sheltering displaced people.

More bombs and bullets will not build peace. The Netanyahu government's strategy has done little to bring the remaining hostages back to their families. It's why we refuse to let this work fail. Luckily, we're far from alone: Recent polls prove that a majority — nearly 60% — of people across the country are with us. That includes a growing number of U.S. voters who say the United States is too supportive of the Israeli government.[4]

We got here in no small part because of an inspiring, passionate global outcry against further violence, but it's time to go further and translate that momentum into action.

Right now, multiple efforts are moving in Congress that would use U.S. leverage for good — increase humanitarian aid, investigate the GHF's use of private funding and contractors, stop the transfer of U.S. bombs to the Israeli military, and more.

It's not just the bombs that we're worried about — we're afraid despair and complacency will allow the violence to become our new normal.

That's why our community gives us so much hope. You are the people who refuse to look away. You are the ones who will help build the world we all want and deserve: One where we all live and thrive without the threat of violence.

Nothing can happen without resources. With your help, we'll be ready to meet this moment and all the ones ahead, to work to get people in Palestine, Israel, and beyond the peaceful solutions they need.

Thank you for working for peace,
The Win Without War team
