Elon Musk is at it again, Pamela.
He's mad at Trump's spending bill that sold our country out to billionaires – but only because it didn't give enough special favors to the most important billionaire of all: himself.
So after months of taking our government hostage and defrauding the American people, he's decided to create a new political party. [1] He's hoping to buy enough Senate and House races in 2026 to create a voting bloc in Congress that answers only to him and serves as the "deciding vote on contentious laws." [2]
The Elon Musk / Donald Trump saga has always been a national embarrassment – but the fact that Musk's $280 million spent to elect Republicans bought him the keys to our government is no laughing matter. [3]
And no matter what you think of his latest stunt, the fact that just one man can purchase this much influence is a sign that something's seriously broken in our politics.
After all – even though Trump and Musk are on the outs right now, it's not off the table that they could patch things up – and that Musk could leverage his threat to spend millions on the 2026 elections into even more special favors that make him even richer at our expense.
Pamela, there's a lot broken in Washington D.C. – but does anyone seriously think the problem is that too few politicians are taking orders from billionaires like Elon Musk?
Here's the good news: When Musk spent $20 million in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race earlier this year, voters resoundingly rejected his attempts to buy influence and his chosen candidate lost by a wide margin. [3]
It's just common sense: We The People should decide our elections - not a billionaire whose only motives are getting revenge or getting rich. And with your help, Common Cause will continue serving as a persistent and powerful voice for all the people, not just those who are wealthy enough to buy off politicians.
Our work has never been more urgent. And how much we can get done depends on you. Can you chip in $5 to ensure our elections are decided by We The People?
